Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) & Authorizations

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Authorizations are a cornerstone of responsible project development, ensuring that new mining and civil projects are environmentally sound from the outset. This process begins with a Scoping and EIA Process, which systematically identifies potential environmental consequences. For smaller projects, a Basic Assessment (BA) is conducted, while more complex ventures require a full-scale EIA. Following this, an Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) is developed, which is a detailed, actionable plan outlining how to mitigate and manage environmental impacts throughout every stage of the project—from its initial planning and construction to its final decommissioning and post-closure phases. A critical outcome of this process is obtaining Environmental Authorizations (EAs), which are the necessary permits from regulatory bodies that grant legal approval for the project to proceed. In addition to project-specific assessments, we also conduct Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) for broader policies and programs, integrating environmental considerations into high-level decision-making from the earliest stages.

Water Use Licensing & Water Resource Management

Water is a critical and often sensitive resource, making robust water use management essential for both compliance and sustainability. A key service is Water Use License Applications (WULAs), a comprehensive process for obtaining permits from the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) for various activities. These include everything from abstracting surface or groundwater and storing water to impacting a watercourse or discharging waste. For less complex water uses, we assist with General Authorization (GA) Applications, which offer a more streamlined approval process. To manage a site's water resources holistically, we develop Integrated Water and Waste Management Plans (IWWMPs), which are particularly vital for mining operations. Ongoing Water Quality Monitoring is conducted through regular sampling and analysis, ensuring compliance with legal standards. This is supported by specialist Hydrological and Hydrogeological Studies that assess water flow, groundwater resources, and flood risks. Finally, we create Stormwater Management Plans to prevent erosion and pollution from runoff and perform Dam Safety Evaluations to ensure the integrity and compliance of water containment structures.
